PROGRAM SPECIFICS:

Spanish instruction has been a part of the Chesapeake Academy curriculum for over two decades, with twice weekly classes for all students in Pre-Kindergarten 3 & 4 through fifth grade and three times per week for academic Spanish in seventh and eighth grades with a Spanish instructor.

The Spanish curriculum in Pre-Kindergarten 3 & 4 through sixth grade focuses on conversational Spanish. Students in seventh and eighth grade are placed in high school level Spanish I, which is divided into two years for appropriate pacing of content for Middle School students. Real-world applications of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the language are core to the curriculum.

Conversational Spanish in Pre-Kindergarten 3 & 4 through sixth grade is designed to introduce students to basic vocabulary and interpersonal conversation. As a guide and reference, the teacher uses Teach Them Spanish (K-5) and Rockalingua, as well as other curated content. Content is reinforced through classroom conversations, activities, puppets, and play acting.

In Spanish I (divided into A in seventh grade and B in eighth grade), students have classes three times per week for a 45-minute period. Formal textbook study is introduced (¡Así se dice! and its workbook). Conversational skills are stressed and reinforced daily in class and regularly through skits and projects. Students also read articles in Spanish that give them insight into the culture, literature, art, and history of Spanish-speaking countries. Assessments on progress include written assignments and oral presentations. All four areas of language–listening, speaking, reading, and writing–continue to be emphasized in preparation for advanced Spanish study in high school. Students who successfully complete Spanish I (A and B) at Chesapeake Academy are well-prepared to go on to Spanish II in high school.

New faculty members will be paired with a mentor/coach from the program team for weekly meetings to ensure support.
